The hype of social media has got a lot of people stumbling for footing. And a lot of people telling their agencies “We need to be on Facebook!”. Do you really?

As with all communication projects, social media needs a plan. Who are you trying to reach? Where are they? And even if you know your audience is active in the social media space, are you ready to embrace social media? Social media is not a bunch of websites like Facebook and Twitter. Social media is a mindset, a way of embracing transparent discussion with your audience.

Econsultancy wrote “Five signs your business is not ready for social media” and stresses that if you are not ready to make a commitment to understand what social media is you will not succeed.

Social media is not for everyone but if you are open to learn maybe it is for you? I had the privilege to listen to Tor Björn Minde from Ericson Labs at Social Business Conference talk about how he prepared Ericsson Labs for moving into social media and how their strategy to connect with developers worldwide have been very successful. Through social media they now drive traffic to their website and have increased the number of people who access their APIs to create new cool applications for Ericsson phones.

So if you are curious about the social media landscape, go learn and explore. And find the best way for your business to engage.
