Sometimes my husband asks me “What do you do all day?”. This question arises when we have talked about how many billable hours I’ve done during a day and he looks at the list of other things that I could have done, like lawn-moving or painting the new bedroom, if I didn’t work a full day.
So what do I do? I engage in learning new skills, staying on top of new developments in Internet marketing and taking care of my networks. But I can see how this might be interpreted as just browsing and not doing anything useful to the uninitiated. I, of course, disagree, For me its an investment that will help me in the future to get new assignments and help me execute existing assignments better.
This morning while taking a walk I thought again about the possibility that I am just wasting time online. I was prompted to think about this by one of the podcast I subscribe to, from the BBC, Digital Planet. This episode, from 23 June, talked about a new Firefox add-on – Leechblock – where you can set sites to avoid and what time during the day you want to avoid them. An interesting idea and probably a useful one for a lot of people.
Yes, I do tend to loose myself and suddenly a few hours have passed. But I realised that even though I get caught up I rarely stray away from my original task.
