Nobel Peace Prize to Twitter?

Unless you’ve been on a deserted island for the last 12 months you’ll probably have noticed that social media is all the rave at the moment. And can it get more hyped than awarding the Noble Peace Price to a social media outlet, Twitter?

It was Mark Pfeifle,  a former aide to President George W Bush, who in an interview last week made the suggestion that Twitter should be awared the prize for its role during the protests after the Iranian elections.

And yes, Twitter played a large role in spreading the word, and pitcure, about what was happening in Iran but awarding it the Peace Prize seems a bit over the top. It’s a technical platform allowing for the spread of 140 character messages and as such is relies on its users to fill it with content. Twitter by itself can not drive an issue. It merely made it easier for people caught in the protests to spread text and images to the rest of the world.

But it is an interesting thought in this world dazzled by the phenomena called “social media”.
