When I started my business at the beginning of this year I also decided to finally get an account on Twitter so I could listen in on the discussions around marketing, social media and technology.
One of the things I believe is the key to Twitter is not the short messages but the possibility for me to follow whomever I want. For me this is the perfect way of growing my professional network and reach.
As time passes I have started to aquire a modest following. Presently 105 people from all over the world follow me – a sole trader in e-marketing from Sweden. That is also the power of e-networks. For me it’s not about the amount of followers I have, it’s what I can learn from the people I follow and hopefully that enriches the people who follow me.
It is interesting to see how some events can trigger a “surge” of new followers. I took part in a webinar on Social Media Marketing today that Lyris arranged and as I thought they did not explain social media correctly I had to butt in. You can see my comments on twitter.com #LyrisESM. When the webinar was over I went to check my email and – voilá – a bunch of new followers. How cool.
But at the same time I realised that they found something I said interesting enough to make the choice to follow me. I now have the responsibility to make sure I live up to it. My Twitter engagement suddenly became much more serious.
On Twitter you’ll find me as @mariaatomaca, see you there.
